Peter Abelard (1079–1142 ce) was the most wide‐ranging philosopher of the twelfth century. He quickly established himself as a leading teacher of logic in and near Paris shortly after 1100. After his affair with Heloise, and his subsequent castration, Abelard became a monk, but he returned to teaching in the Paris schools until 1140, when his work was condemned by a Church Council at Sens. His logical writings were based around discussion of the “Old Logic”: Porphyry's Isagoge, aristotle'S Categories and (...) On Interpretation and boethius'S textbook on topical inference. They comprise a freestanding Dialectica (“Logic”; probably c.1116), a set of commentaries (known as the Logica [Ingredientibus], c. 1119) and a later (c. 1125) commentary on the Isagoge (Logica Nostrorum Petititoni Sociorum or Glossulae). In a work Abelard called his Theologia, issued in three main versions (between 1120 and c.1134), he attempted a logical analysis of trinitarian relations and explored the philosophical problems surrounding God's claims to omnipotence and omniscience. The Collationes (“Debates,” also known as “Dialogue between a Christian, a Philosopher and a Jew”; probably c.1130) present a rational investigation into the nature of the highest good, in which the Christian and the Philosopher (who seems to be modeled on a philosopher of pagan antiquity) are remarkably in agreement. In lieu of an abstract, here is a brief excerpt of the content:Notes and Discussions THE UNITY OF WISDOM AND TEMPERANCE The attempt of Socrates to establish the unity of the virtues has long been an object of philosophic suspicion. Particular attention has been directed to the argument at Protagoras 332a-333b, in which Socrates seeks to demonstrate the unity of wisdom and temperance, by showing that they must be identified as the contrary of folly. The argument proceeds on the assumption (...) that wisdom and temperance are distinct, and so terminates in a contradiction between 'Whatever admits of a contrary admits of one only' and 'Folly, which is one thing, has two contraries, wisdom and temperance.' Scholars have generally rejected Socrates' proof of the second of the contradictory propositions. However, in a recent paper, Professor David Savan has claimed that the contradiction is derived in a formally valid way from premisses which either need no argument or are accepted by Protagoras} My intent in this paper is to cast doubt on this claim, and so to restore the status quo. According to the critics, the weak point in the argument is Socrates' defence of the statement 'Foolish acts and temperate acts are contraries.' But Saran holds that this statement follows from three conditionals, all stated by Socrates and accepted by Protagoras. These conditionals, referred to by Savan as F G and H, will here be termed P1-3. P1 If an act is right and advantageous, then it is temperate. Symbolically: (r.a) D t P2 If an act is wrong, then it is foolish. w~f P3 If an act is foolish, then it is not temperate. fD -t From these, Saran argues, "it follows that 'An act is right' and 'An act is temperate ' are truth functionallyequivalent, as are 'An act is wrong' and 'An act is foolish'.... Savan then argues that Protagoras, on the basis of his remarks earlier in the dialogue, must take right and wrong to be contradictories, so that temperate and foolish actions are also contradictories, rather than contraries. I want first to consider whether the material equivalences alleged to follow from P1-3 do in fact follow. Scientists and laypeople alike use the sense of understanding that an explanation conveys as a cue to good or correct explanation. Although the occurrence of this sense or feeling of understanding is neither necessary nor sufficient for good explanation, it does drive judgments of the plausibility and, ultimately, the acceptability, of an explanation. This paper presents evidence that the sense of understanding is in part the routine consequence of two well-documented biases in cognitive psychology: overconfidence and hindsight. In light of (...) the prevalence of counterfeit understanding in the history of science, I argue that many forms of cognitive achievement do not involve a sense of understanding, and that only the truth or accuracy of an explanation make the sense of understanding a valid cue to genuine understanding. Philosophers agree that scientific explanations aim to produce understanding, and that good ones succeed in this aim. But few seriously consider what understanding is, or what the cues are when we have it. If it is a psychological state or process, describing its specific nature is the job of psychological theorizing. This article examines the role of understanding in scientific explanation. It warns that the seductive, phenomenological sense of understanding is often, but mistakenly, viewed as a cue of genuine understanding. (...) Dans «A Society of Individuals», j’esquisse une société qui n’a pas de bien propre, pas de fin sociale, mais qui existe plutôt pour permettre à chacun de ses membres de mieux poursuivre son propre bien, facilitant la coopération et résolvant le problème d’interaction de base, à savoir le fait que la maximisation de l’utilité et l’optimisation Pareto sont parfois incompatibles. Le point de vue orthodoxe défend la rationalité de la maximisation; je défends l’optimisation Pareto. Je soutiens que si nous pouvions (...) fixer les caractéristiques de notre société par un accord préalable, nous nous entendrions sur une société d’individus, et que le fait que nous nous entendions ex ante sur une certaine pratique sociale ou institution est la meilleure justification possible qu’elle constitue pour nous une norme.J’esquisse ensuite quelques-unes des caractéristiques principales de cette société. En faisant cela, je suppose que les membres de la société ne sont pas tous adeptes du contractarianisme, mais qu’ils peuvent soutenir différentes conceptions raisonnables que la société doit chercher à accommoder. Je considère la façon dont plusieurs prétendus droits, comme un droit à certaines ressources, seraient vus dans la société. Et je conclus avec l’idée que le contractarianisme, en faisant valoir que chaque membre adulte de la société doit bénéficier d’une citoyenneté égale, doit permettre à chacun de participer au choix et à la destitution des gouvernements. On peut alors penser que l’émergence d’une société d’individus constitue l’accomplissement de l’idéal démocratique. (shrink)

Un lecteur n'estjamais seul et un auteur, même polycéphale, n'est qu'un ventriloque insulaire. D'oú on peut tirer quelques avantages pour l'édification de l'un et le redressement de l'autre. La lecture prudente de François Lepage m'invite à un excés de vertu que j'étalerai en quatre points et le manque d'éthique qu'il me reproche à bon droit trouvera ici une confirmation nouvelle.

Les questions fondationnelles en logique et en mathématiques, les questions de fond et de fondements sont-elles des questions qui relèvent de la foi ou de la croyance ou des questions susceptibles d'analyse rigoureuse et philosophiquement décidables? C'est cette interrogation que je veux développer et à laquelle j'apporterai une réponse personnelle.

Scientific realists contend that theory-conjunction presents a problem for empiricist conceptions of scientific knowledge and practice. Van Fraassen (1980) has offered a competing account of theory-conjunction which I argue fails to capture the mercenary character of epistemic dependence in science. Representative cases of theory-conjunction developed in the present paper show that mercenary reliance implies a "principle of epistemic symmetry" which only a realist can consistently accommodate. Finally, because the practice in question involves the conjunction of theories, a version of realism (...) more robust than the "entity realism" of Cartwright (1983, 1989) and Hacking (1983) is required to explain the success of theory-conjunction. The use of null hypothesis significance testing (NHST) in psychology has been under sustained attack, despite its reliable use in the notably successful, so-called "hard" areas of psychology, such as perception and cognition. I argue that, in contrast to merely methodological analyses of hypothesis testing (in terms of "test severity," or other confirmation-theoretic notions), only a patently metaphysical position can adequately capture the uneven but undeniable successes of theories in "hard psychology." I contend that Measured Realism satisfies this description, and (...) characterizes the role of NHST in hard psychology. (shrink)

L'ouvrage de M. Bitbol est la suite d'un livre qu'il a consacré à la mécanique quantique et dont j'ai rendu compte dans Dialogue. Il s'agit bien d'une suite naturelle à son tour d'horizon de la problématique philosophique de la mécanique quantique. Mais alors qu'il s'aventurait dans quelques-uns des problèmes techniques de la philosophie quantique dans son premier ouvrage original, il se limite ici à un commentaire, philosophique et jamais technique, d'un ouvrage collectif paru sous sa direction : Physique et réalité (...) en hommage à Bernard d'Espagnat. Or, le texte de l'auteur, qui paraît séparément, est pour l'essentiel un commentaire presque littéral des critiques adressées à d'Espagnat et des réponses qu'il a faites, avec une belle générosité faut-il le dire. Nous devons reconnaître à d'Espagnat la paternité—ce que d'autres n'ont pas manqué de faire—du questionnement philosophique de la mécanique quantique en France. Élève de Louis de Broglie, dont il a retenu la méfiance vis-à-vis la «nouvelle» mécanique quantique, il n'a cessé de défendre un réalisme à découvert des Conceptions de la physique contemporaine jusqu'à Le réel voilé. D'Espagnat, à l'origine physicien des hautes énergies comme d'autres, s'est converti à une philosophie transcendantale de seconde «kantisation», si l'on peut se permettre de déformer le terme de seconde quantisation qui appartient à la mécanique quantique et qui signifie que l'on «quantise» un champ plutôt qu'une particule—la première «kantisation» dans le cas de la mécanique quantique aurait été le fait de Cassirer et de G. Hermann dont on vient de redécouvrir Les fondements philosophiques de la mécanique quantique parus en allemand en 1935 et traduits récemment par L. Soler. (shrink)

Professor Flew's vigorous and interesting paper, “The Justification of Punishment,” in PHILOSOPHY for October 1954 discusses my article on Punishment in Mind for April 1939. It merits some rejoinder. Flew's paper ranges far beyond the particular issue of punishment, and much of what is most interesting in it has this wider relevance. I, too, therefore shall use punishment as a peg on which to hang some discussion of the wider problems of ethics.

I propose to consider in this paper some points concerning the part played by reason in non-moral conduct. The place of reason in ethics is a separate issue with which I shall not be directly concerned.

We show that if the weak compactness of a cardinal is made indestructible by means of any preparatory forcing of a certain general type, including any forcing naively resembling the Laver preparation, then the cardinal was originally supercompact. We then apply this theorem to show that the hypothesis of supercompactness is necessary for certain proof schemata.

Altruistic donation of organs from living donors is widely accepted as a virtue and even encouraged as a duty. Selling organs, on the other hand, is highly controversial and banned in most countries. What is the Jewish legal position on these issues? In this review it is explained that altruistic donation is praiseworthy but in no way obligatory. Selling organs is a subject of rabbinic dispute among contemporary authorities.
